5/24/2023 0 Comments Without Child by Laurie Lisle![]() Overall, both books represent excellent teaching tools either as com- panion volumes or on their own. While the implications of these findings are not discussed, they would undoubtedly provide the basis for an interesting classroom discussion. The author stresses the importance of conducting research within multiple contexts prior to the assumption of universal behaviors. Results are com- pared with those represented in literature on American families. On the other end of the life course continuum, Phyllis Bronstien explores the behaviors of Mexican parents toward their children. In her article, ‘‘Aging Minority Women,’’ Padgett discusses resilience and adaptive functioning among older women of color, exploring how they thrive despite being ‘‘old, poor, female, and of minority status’’ (p. ![]() Independent segments of the book have also been dedicated to a discussion of childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, and late adulthood. There wasn’t a huge amount of drama or conflict. ![]() Her memoir, Orange is the New Black, is more akin to Eat, Pray, Love, only instead of spending a year traveling, Kerman “found herself” in prison. Not to take anything away from Kerman’s story, but after reading numerous interviews, book chapters, and reviews of her memoir, I wouldn’t have liked a series that was actually based on Kerman’s bio and experiences in prison. Orange is the New Black may have begun as Piper Kerman’s story, but over the course of the first season, it became an ensemble show and going into the second season, the character based on Piper Kerman, Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), will begin to blend even more into the cast. ![]() I also really appreciate what showrunner Jenji Kohan has done by using a pretty, blonde lead as an entry point into a series that’s really about these other characters that might not otherwise be featured players in a popular drama. In fact, next to Rectify, it was my favorite new show of 2013. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Left behind by tim lahaye![]() They have some good moments - the shots at liberal theology and the New Age movement horrific thrills suspense that builds through book after book - but they fall short as Christian literature. The Left Behind novels are fiction, not theology, so they must be approached as literature. ![]() Christians should be leery of building their faith on expectations of Christ’s imminent return, rather than what Christ has already done for us on the cross. The problem is, Scripture is not clear on all of these questions - which makes the various interpretations possible - so Christians ought not approach them with such certainty. ![]() The various eschatological positions - premillennialism, postmillennialism, and amillennialism - have their advocates, all of whom base their position on Scripture. Speculation about when Christ will return and attempts to decode the Bible’s prophecies have been popular for centuries. One might rejoice that a conservative, Bible-believing, evangelical title has finally broken through into the mass market and thus, presumably, into the culture as a whole but unfortunately, the great popularity of the series is spreading confusion and misunderstanding about the end times. The series of children’s books about a school for witches has sold 12 million copies, but the series of apocalyptic novels has sold 20 million. ![]() The Left Behind books are bigger than Harry Potter. ![]() ![]() ![]() He falls hard for Jordan, and then spends a lot of time trying to figure out why Jordan can’t seem to be around him. Then Dylan becomes infused (infected?) with hydrogen as well, and things get way out of control.ĭylan is the real heart of the novel, an exuberant teen with a couple of loyal best friends, a job at the Dairy Queen, an enemy in the class mean girl, and a romantic’s heart. As a result, arson has become quite common in his new neighborhood, and the more he is around new crush Dylan, the more heated things become. Jordan lives at an elevated temperature and, when he is under stress, has a habit of uncontrollably starting fires. Zepka doesn’t spend a lot of time explaining what happened, preferring instead to focus on the impact. I’ll be honest I’m a bit fuzzy on exactly what caused Jordan to be infused with hydrogen or how he is supposed to be alive with this condition. ![]() The Temperature of Me and You, Brian Zepka ( Disney-Hyperion 978-1-36806-471-2, $17.99, hc, 416 pp) January 2022.Īuthor Brian Zepka set out to blend a sweet romance with high school drama and a major science fiction twist in The Temperature of Me and You, a novel involving the teen victim of a lab accident/experiment that has left him literally burning from the inside out. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Hammer and hoe kelley![]() Sharecropping was not much better than slavery.
